I hope by now that all of you are aware of the Academic Resource Centre, this marvelous global resource contains a wealth of information and materials contributed by academics and professionals from around the world. Here you will find papers, labs, videos, tests and much more, all ready to present to your students . In September this year we added 154 pieces of new content which included 140 videos from the Microsoft eScience Workshop and the Microsoft Academic Days on Windows and Embedded Computing. A large proportion of the content is in English (and/or American) so if you are looking for new material, it will be worth your while to search through and download what you need - all for free of course! For example, here are some of the new links that I thought would be of interest: Claire

This is a question I have been asked a lot of late and the answer is that they are still available upon request. At Gamecity tomorrow we will be announcing a list of talks focused on games development, these will be presented by a range of speakers from Rare, our game studios. We are also developing some talks that specialize on Embedded Technology too and I will publish details of these shortly. As always, if you wish to request a speaker on a specific topic then please get in touch. We have recently arranged for: - a security talk at the University of Glamorgan,
- a games talk at Manchester Metropolitan University as part of the Cybergames conference
- a games talk at the BCS in Scotland
- a games talk for Liverpool John Moore's University
- a talk on Microsoft Project for the University of Bolton
If you have a request then please get in touch. Claire

The Imagine Cup is THE 'must enter' student technology competition. Now in its sixth year, the Imagine Cup has grown to be a truly global competition focused on finding solutions to real world issues...this year the theme is "Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment." Imagine a world where technology is an ally of the planet, not an adversary. A world where software enables us to interpret environmental indicators, predict the outcomes of our actions, improve our consumption of precious resources, and live more in balance with our environment. In Imagine Cup 2008, we challenge the top student technologists around the world to actively contribute to the mission of protecting our world for generations to come. For some, a sustainable environment means something as simple as breathing fresh air each time they open their window. For others it means making significant changes in key environmental indicators. Any way you look at it, you get to decide how technology can help solve this problem for yourself, your country, and yeah…even the planet. As previously, there are several ways (called Invitationals) to enter the competition. As always, if you have any questions about this competition then please email me. The Inspiration Tour is underway and our presenters Ed Dunhill and Ben Coley have so far presented at Manchester Metropolitan University and Staffordshire University. Check out their blogs to read comments from the students and to access links to some great accompanying resources.
Next they are off to Bradford, Hull, Essex and Aberystwyth, oh and stopping by Nottingham to help with GameCity. Those of you who have already booked a date should now have an email from me with the electronic version of the flyer and in the next few days you should receive a poster tube with some hard copies too.
Don't forget to let me know how many students will be at your session so that I can send you enough t-shirts and other items to give out. One smart university set up a simple registration system so that they would know when the event was sold out and conversely, if more marketing needed to be done. We do this with all of our internal events and allow for a 30% drop-out rate.
If you have any questions about the tour or still haven't booked your slot yet then please email me i-claipe@microsoft.com. You can check date availability here

Those of you who are working with XNA should check out the XNA User Group. The founders, Robin and Leaf, will be joining us at both of our GameCity events so you will have the chance to meet them there and find out more about the group. In the meantime take a look at their site and blog. If you have technical questions, want to contribute to the forums, want to receive invites to games events or just want to socialize with other games coders then this is the place for you. Claire

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is to explain the opportunities for students to engage with Microsoft. We welcome the chance to work with passionate students and can do so in the following ways: The Microsoft Student Partner Programme; Students are selected annually to act as our ambassadors on campus. This is an voluntary part-time post that includes training days, socials, business connections and networking opportunities. The UK Microsoft Intern Programme; Students from a range of disciplines are selected annually to come and work at our UK offices on a paid work placement for one year. The Redmond Intern Programme; Students from a range of disciplines are selected to work at our headquarters in Seattle for a 12 week paid placement (usually during the summer). The Student Graduate Development Programme is a six month paid programme for graduates with a passion for software development. The MACH programme (Microsoft Academy for University Hires) is a two year paid programme for graduates. The S2B Programme (Student to Business) is a paid programme operating in many countries across EMEA. Students will be able to hear more about these programmes and ask questions to the speakers presenting The Inspiration Tour. If you haven't booked for the tour to come to your university yet then please a couple of dates and get in touch as soon as possible, this term is almost fully booked but there are some dates available next term. GameCity is an annual event held in Nottingham from October 24th-28th. As part of this, the Microsoft Academic team and Rare are running 2 events: the first for academics, the second for students on Thursday October 25th. The Academic Event is an invitation only event for lecturers of Games Development and will be held at the Sir Paul Smith designed cinema at the Broadway Media Centre between 2pm and 6pm. This anticipated follow up to our XNA launch at Warwick University last December will feature talks and demos on XNA including Insights from professional games developers, work done by academics on our XNA pilot programme and students using XNA within their projects. If you are an academic at a UK university then please email me i-claipe@microsoft.com to receive further information and to reserve your seat. From 7pm that evening, we will join our colleagues from Rare and the Xbox team at Bluu for the FreePlay Lounge. Students are invited to come along and challenge the creators of Perfect Dark Zero, meet the designers of Kameo and Viva Pinata, sign up for the Imagine Cup, win Halo 3 merchandise and much more.... all washed down with a beverage or two. Academics are invited to join us and to take the opportunity to recruit potential students onto your courses. Again, if you are a UK academic and would like to come along and bring some of your students to this event then please email me at i-claipe@microsoft.com Claire
