  • Microsoft Research Asia - 10th Anniversary Innovation Forum

On August 12, Bill Gates, Chairman of Microsoft®, joined visionary technologists from Microsoft Research (MSR) Asia, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, and the University of Hong Kong, to celebrate a decade of ground-breaking collaboration during the Microsoft Research Asia's 10th Anniversary Innovation Forum.

Gates, who delivered the keynote speech, said that Microsoft’s relationship to academia in the Asia Pacific region remains vital and that cultivating the next generation of researchers should continue to be a focal point of MSR Asia’s work. “For the last 10 years, great collaborative work between Microsoft Research Asia and the region’s world-leading academic researchers has resulted in a wide range of exciting technology innovations,” Gates said. “As Asia becomes more and more of a global centre for innovation, I have no doubt that Microsoft Research Asia and its academic partners will have an even bigger impact on the world of technology.”

At the MSR Asia Innovation Forum, Bill Gates said that the success of Microsoft depends on its ability to attract and retain the best talent from around the world—something he believes MSR Asia is doing well.

  • Software Entrepreneurship Faculty Workshop

    Hi All,

In June, Bournemouth University played host to Lars Lindstedt who delivered a two day Software Entrepreneurship Faculty Workshop.

The training materials for that event are now available to view on the National Council for Graduate Entrepreneurship website and include the slide decks together with a couple of case studies.

Do please take a look, and if you have any questions or want further information, come back to me and I’ll be happy to help.

    Best,

    Allison McVety

  • Inspiration Tour Update

    image

With 17 dates behind them and another 37 yet to come, Ed and Ben are having a great impact on the students that they present to as part of the Inspiration Tour. We love to get feedback, both good and bad but our favourite so far is:

The talk you gave today was absolutely awesome, as were the demos. Loved every minute of it from the front row. You even had me crying when you were talking about the opportunities - everything I dreamed about. Thanks to both of you.

All dates are now booked but if your university has missed out then please get in touch and we will see if we can fit you into an additional slot.

  • Life as an intern on the Microsoft Student Placement Programme

Based in Reading and London, our placements last 48 weeks, beginning with a week-long induction designed to introduce the student to all the different areas of the business and identify objectives for their professional development.

Subsequent learning will take the form of on-the-job training within thier team, bespoke skills training and one-to-one performance reviews. Most importantly, they'll do real work and have real opportunities to make a genuine impact on our business and their future.

The benefits of a Microsoft Student Placement don’t merely apply to their future career, however. There’s also some pretty hefty advantages to getting involved with Microsoft from day one, including a £14,500 a year salary, £500 sign on bonus, 25 days’ holiday per year, and – should you wish to return to Microsoft on the MACH programme – a fast-track to the last stage of the assessment process.

Please encourage your students to apply by returning a completed application form available here to sturec@microsoft.com quoting placement08.  They might even end up working in our team and take over from Ben Coley from De Montfort and Muhammad Walji from Brunel

  • Tell us about your end of year show

An end of year show is the exciting culmination of a lot of hard work, passion and enthusiasm from both students and staff. We would like to help promote all of this effort to a wider audience including potential employers. If you have short article or a link to your show's website then you could either comment on this blog post with the details and/or send it to ukmsacad@microsoft.com for inclusion in our next newsletter.

  • Nominate a student to be a Microsoft Student Partner

The Microsoft Student Partner programme is a great way for students who are passionate about technology to work alongside Microsoft. As an MSP the students will receive training, resources, mentoring and more, in return they will act as our ambassadors on campus. The programme has been so successful this year that we want to extend it and have an MSP at every university next year. The deadline for applications is fast approaching - May 26th - so we are asking for your help in 2 ways:

    1. Please send a short email to Stuart Leddy telling us who you wish to nominate and why t-sleddy@microsoft.com

    and

    2. Ask the student concerned to complete the simple application form on www.microsoft.com/uk/academia

So that we do not detract from their studies, ideal students are those in their penultimate year although we are happy to accept nominations for students in other years if you feel strongly that they are the most suitable. This really is a tremendous opportunity for the student, please see the testimonies on our website from those who took part this year.
