However, these are essential, but not sufficient, ingredients for success. Technical issues, issues regarding development and customization of the tools used to facilitate knowledge management (for example, the SSN web portal), and emerging legal issues surrounding the sharing of intellectual property may be perceived as somewhat less important to the participants, but are nevertheless key factors in the long term success of these communities.

It is also concluded that the foundation for successful collaboration is primarily laid in the initial phases of community development. A community must make a positive impression on its participants from the very beginning because most people won’t give it a second chance. In this report we have highlighted three important areas to consider when establishing portals for knowledge management: Leadership, Purpose and Process/Infrastructure.

Based on demand and available resources, we may do some more empirical research on this topic...let us know if this would be useful!

SSNv3 Portal Components description

SSNv3 Portal Screenshots

If you want to know what the complete SSNv3 looks like once it has been installed, have a look at these screenshots. Some of our customers are happy to use everything that we have done, others are happy to pick and choose at their favorite elements.

Shared Learning Centre Case Study Video

A short 4 minute video outlining the work of the UK Local Government Shared Learning Centre - a group that has come together with Microsoft and Systems Integrators to collectively solve the issues facing local government organizations.

U.S. Counties Improve Collaboration and Governance with Knowledge-Sharing Portals

The National Association of Counties (NACo) wanted to help county governments share knowledge and collaborate with each other. The system is based on Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Portal Server 2003 and taps into the Microsoft Solutions Sharing Network (SSN) initiative to enable public sector organizations to share their IT solutions, best practices, and research with other governments. Developed in partnership with Microsoft and Kanalytics, the Illinois KM system facilitates collaboration among the Illinois State procurement community and information sharing across state borders. This is leading to more intelligent public procurement, saving millions of dollars for taxpayers.
<enclosure url="http://members.microsoft.com/CustomerEvidence/Search/EvidenceDetails.aspx?EvidenceID=14216&LanguageID=1" length="42210" type="text/html;
